Silicone implants health risks

Silicone implants are an option we are pleased to offer our patients considering breast enhancement. Like all cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation must be tailored to a woman?s individual needs to achieve a beautifully natural result, proportioned to their personal body type. Silicone implants are soft and natural feeling, and were re-approved for general cosmetic use in women over age 22 on November 17th, 2006 by the United States Food and Drug Administration. All gel implants today are cohesive, which means that the gel tends to stay in place and has the consistency of something like Jello in that it does not leak or bleed into the tissue if the shell is cut. Silicone implants are definitely softer in feel and will have a significant difference in patients with thin skin / breast tissue. But in patients with thicker skin and more breast tissue this difference will be less noticeable.

Silicone implants are FDA approved for augmentation in women age 22 and older. Saline or silicone implants may be recommended at a younger age if used for reconstruction purposes. Silicone implants are very commonly used in the UK. These implants are essentially bags of silicone gel enclosed in a thin silicone rubber case. Silicone implants are typically placed under the breast already filled with gel, which is why surgeons must create large incisions for its insertion. Saline implants, on the other hand are inserted using smaller incisions because the shell is initially empty before inserted, and then filled once inside the patient.

Silicone implants are already filled at the time they're placed. Silicone implants are now gaining momentum and the FDA is going to rule on weather or not to legalize them (which will probably happen). Although the silicone might have some side effects, it doesn’t seem as awful as thought to be a decade ago. Silicone implants are now being filled with a cohesive gel that will hold its integrity and not leak out of the shell in the unlikely event that the implant ruptures. Old silicone implants had liquid silicone and were more challenging to remove.

Silicone implants are very useful in patients who have minimal amounts of breast tissue. As stated before, women who are very, very thin and have an ectomorphic build, will do very well with silicone implants because it will certainly reduce the visualization of the bag on the side. Silicone implants are coming back on the market for the first time since they were banned in 1992. It's big money for easy surgery — and a lot of women want to look like the thin but big-busted women they see in lingerie catalogs and on "reality" TV shows. Silicone implants are characteristically applied under general or local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. In case, the mechanism is done for cosmetic motives, the incision is certainly made on the lines of lower edge of the areola, in the inframammary fold or in the axilla.

Silicone implants are more expensive. And the same surgeon, of course, is returned to for the additional surgeries that are needed to remove the ruptured 'device.' Lots more money all around.
